Dryer vent cleaning for safer loads and shorter drying times

Lint collects along the entire vent run, not just in the screen. Clearing the full length restores airflow and removes a common source of dryer fires.

Why dryer vents need professional attention

A clothes dryer pushes hot, moist, lint-laden air through a vent to the outdoors. The lint screen catches much of the lint, but not all of it. Fine fibers pass through and settle along the vent run, especially at bends, low spots and the exterior hood. Over months and years, that buildup narrows the vent, slows airflow and raises the temperature inside both the dryer and the duct.

Restricted vents have two effects. The dryer takes longer to dry each load, using more energy and wearing out heating elements, thermal fuses and belts. More seriously, lint is highly flammable, and the U.S. Fire Administration identifies failure to clean as a leading factor in home clothes dryer fires. Regular cleaning of the full vent length reduces that risk significantly.

Our service cleans the entire run with rotary brushes and air, inspects the connection behind the dryer and the exterior hood, and replaces unsafe transition ducts when found.

Warning signs of a clogged dryer vent

If your dryer shows any of these, the vent is a likely suspect.

  • Loads take two cycles to dryWhen towels come out damp after a normal cycle, restricted airflow is often preventing moist air from leaving the drum.
  • The dryer or laundry room feels hotHeat that cannot escape through the vent builds up in the cabinet and the surrounding room.
  • Burning smell during operationA scorched smell can mean lint is overheating near the heating element or in the duct. Stop using the dryer and have it checked.
  • Exterior flap barely opensA healthy vent pushes the hood damper open firmly. A flap that barely moves points to low airflow somewhere along the run.
  • Lint around the outside hoodLint collecting around the exterior vent or on the ground below suggests the hood is clogged or the damper is stuck.
  • It has been over a yearMany homes benefit from annual cleaning, and more frequent service helps large households, long vent runs and homes with pets.

What happens during a vent cleaning

  1. Inspect the connection

The dryer is carefully pulled out, and the transition duct and wall connection are inspected for crushing, kinks and unsafe materials.

  2. Clean the full run

Rotary brushes and compressed air clear lint from the entire vent length, working from the dryer end or the exterior as access allows.

  3. Clear the exterior hood

The hood, damper and any screen are cleaned. Screens on dryer exhaust hoods trap lint, so a damper-style hood is recommended instead.

  4. Replace unsafe parts

Plastic or foil accordion transition ducts are replaced with semi-rigid or rigid metal where needed, with your approval.

  5. Check airflow and reconnect

Airflow at the exterior is checked with the dryer running, the dryer is repositioned without crushing the duct, and results are reviewed with you.

Vent length, materials and the installation mistakes we find

Dryer vents perform best when they are short, straight and smooth inside. Building codes and dryer manufacturers limit vent length, and each elbow adds resistance. The International Residential Code, for example, sets a default maximum length of 35 feet for dryer exhaust ducts and reduces that allowance for each bend, although manufacturer instructions and local codes can change the limit. Long vents with several turns collect lint faster and may need more frequent cleaning or a code-compliant booster fan.

Materials matter as well. Rigid metal duct with smooth interior walls is the preferred material for the concealed vent run. Plastic and thin foil accordion ducts can sag, trap lint in their ridges and crush easily behind the dryer, and many manufacturers prohibit them. Other common problems include vents that terminate in an attic or crawlspace instead of outdoors, joints fastened with screws that protrude into the airflow and snag lint, and exterior hoods fitted with screens. We point out any of these we find and explain the correction.

Between professional cleanings

Clean the lint screen after every load, occasionally wash it with warm soapy water if dryer sheets leave a film, and keep the area around the exterior hood clear of plants, snow and debris.

Why dryer vents clog and how cleaning restores airflow

Every load of laundry sends lint into the dryer vent. The lint screen catches much of it, but fine lint passes through and collects along the duct, especially at bends, low spots and the exterior termination. Over time, the buildup restricts airflow, making the dryer run longer and hotter.

Long vent runs, multiple elbows and flexible plastic or foil ducts increase the risk of clogging. Vents that terminate on roofs are prone to lint accumulation at the cap, where screens or birds' nests can block airflow. Signs of a restricted vent include longer drying times, clothes that feel hot at the end of a cycle, a hot laundry room and lint around the exterior vent.

Cleaning involves disconnecting the dryer, using rotary brushes and air to clear lint from the full length of the vent and removing debris from the exterior cap. The transition duct behind the dryer is inspected and replaced if it is crushed, kinked or made from unsafe materials.

After cleaning, airflow at the exterior termination is checked. If the vent run is excessively long or routed poorly, recommendations may include rerouting, using smooth metal duct or installing a booster fan designed for dryer exhaust. Regular cleaning keeps the dryer efficient and reduces fire risk.

Dryer vent mistakes

These common errors increase fire risk and drying time.

Using plastic or foil accordion duct

These materials trap lint and can crush easily. Smooth metal duct is preferred for dryer exhaust.

Ignoring longer drying times

Clothes that take multiple cycles to dry are often a sign of vent restriction.

Pushing the dryer tight against the wall

Crushing the transition duct restricts airflow and increases lint buildup.

Installing screens on exterior vents

Screens can trap lint and block airflow. Proper vent caps allow lint to exit while keeping pests out.

Forgetting roof terminations

Roof vents can clog quickly and should be inspected and cleaned regularly.

What determines the cost of vent cleaning

Vent length and routing
Short, straight runs clean quickly. Long runs with multiple elbows, or vents that exit through the roof, take more time and equipment.
Roof or high access
Roof-terminated vents require safe roof access, which adds time compared to a vent that exits at ground level.
Parts replacement
New transition ducts, exterior hoods or repaired sections of vent are priced separately and installed only with your approval.
Severity of buildup
Heavily packed vents, nests or blockages take longer to clear than routine annual cleanings.

Dryer vent cleaning questions

Many homes should have the vent cleaned once a year. Larger households, homes with pets, long vent runs and vents with several turns may need more frequent service.

No. Dryer vent cleaning focuses only on the exhaust vent from the clothes dryer to the outdoors. It is separate from the heating and cooling ductwork.

Yes. Restricted airflow makes the dryer run hotter and longer, which can trip thermal fuses, wear out heating elements and shorten the life of the appliance.

Yes, and it is especially important. Gas dryers produce combustion byproducts, including carbon monoxide, that must vent outdoors, so a blocked vent is a safety concern.

Screens catch lint and quickly clog, blocking airflow. Dryer exhaust hoods should use a backdraft damper to keep pests out without a screen.
